Humanities & Social Sciences Primer
This primer is for faculty and student researchers, and their administrator colleagues, who do not conduct basic and applied research in science or engineering. A separate training is warranted because they engage in only a few activities that raise export controls issues. These include conducting research activities in or for the benefit of countries against which the U.S. government administers sanctions or an embargo, traveling overseas with laptops or other export-controlled equipment (e.g., geo-physical survey equipment for archaeology), or shipping controlled items overseas. This training aims to teach researchers and administrators to:
- Recognize when research activities implicate export controls; AND
- Identify the red flags (
) that warrant calling ORIA for information and assistance.
ORIA has also provided humanities researchers and administrators with a Decision Tree for International Travel or Research Activities. Please consult this Tree before you travel overseas or engage in research or scholarly activities involving Cuba, Iran, Sudan, Syria, North Korea, or Burma. It will alert you when to call ORIA.
